slaughter of bloom

I've been silent these last few days
as the rain has come day after day

and the slaughter of bloom,
petals in their prime

carpeted the ground in deep pinks
upside down--silent testimony

to a fate that strikes
the innocent and guilty alike

and I think of my dear Mario
and his daughter Maria

one struck down in his youth
the other given a 50/50 chance

so come Monday
fate may take my tongue

as she has taken the two
furriest loves of my life

with no rhyme
or reason

Mario (the father Yorkie) died in his prime of a mysterious ailment. Maria, his daughter, has not been feeling well. She goes for surgery on Monday. Vet says 50/50 chance the lumps in her chest are cancer and might very well have spread to her lungs.

I am loving your title and it fits so purrrrrrrrrrrrfectly.
Sad words.I would surely die if anything happened to my dog. I am not a people's person and much prefere the four legged kind.

'and the slaughter of bloom,

A beautiful image and my fav of the whole.
Lovely write, you.

Thanks SarahA. I loved that part too. If you could see how the rain has deflowered my azaleas, you'd know the exact image that inspired this poem. As always, your kind words are most appreciated. Hope you have a wonderful weekend. :-)

I love the picture you chose. It sets a mood for your words that wouldn't be there if it was just a page of text.

Thanks Phil. I'm a visual learner and feel the same way in that the images give the poems a depth or dimension that just the text doesn't in the way a very good music video or live performance will give a song a little something more than just the music.

Sorry to hear! The fuzzy ones are so loved. I know, we make their short lives the best, and they give us their best...but damn, they take pieces of us with them....

...and they leave pieces with us.

Hoping for the best.

Thanks OB. I like what you've said very much and agree with all of it. Maria is "my" dog of the four we have. I would be inconsolable if we were to lose her now.

Thanks Sandra. I'll probably write a poem or at least give some sort of update since I publicly put it out there she was having surgery tomorrow. Thanks for your prayers. I hope we have good news.

My heart is with you, Tree. I spent the night sitting with our sweet old Pepper, who is having trouble breathing and can't walk without the Prednisone, which is causing the respiratory problems. After reading all your beautiful poems, I shed some tears. You're a brave man, my friend. Not many people are able to fill their hearts, empty them and make room for more love the way you do. One of the gifts that people have been given is the ability to help animals stop suffering and find peace. You and I need to remember that right now.

Victoria, thank you for your kind words and your wisdom. We just dropped Maria off at the Vet. Surgery is scheduled for this morning. Hopefully we will know more in a matter of hours. I'm hoping for the best. I need her too much to lose her and I pray a higher power sees it that way too. Thank you again for the wonderfully kind comment. I'll update when I know more.
