298. The Dream Chip
Kyra held a small golden disc in her hands, not much bigger than the pad of her pinky finger.
"I bet you're wondering what that is," said John, rubbing the back of his head and realizing Kyra had inadvertently found and released the chip as she tightened his blindfold.
"Well, I wasn't going to ask."
"It's what is called a dream chip. Kulmyk fighter pilots, for training purposes had a small chip installed in the back of their head. It recorded brain activity and allowed specialized neuronic training, a way to accelerate the learning process, or so they said."
"I see," said Kyra, taking the measure of John's face. His blindfold secure. "So why do they call it a "dream chip?"
John smiled. "The chip also records dreams. Our scientists thought this was important in the evaluation process of new fighter pilots. They wanted a window into a Kulmyk's hopes and fears, into his psyche, his dreams if you will."
"So this chip has your dreams on it?"
"Yep."
"And this chip allows you to view your dreams, to watch them like a movie?"
"Yes."
"So I could, if I wanted, see your dreams?"
"Yes, you could, if you wanted."
"And right now, in your condition, you couldn't stop me, if I wanted?"
"I suppose that's true."

After Rog shot six holes in Kyra's door, the brilliant blinding light "sunburned" the retinas of Rog, John, Von and Em. Kyra, upon waking, placed a salve on their eyes and fixed blindfolds to aid in the healing process. As she was tightening the blindfold on John, the chip came off in her hand.
And here we have yet another example to follow things like the Magic Pillow and the tool, such wonderfully imaginative ideas to thrill and delight, to make us wonder at what it would be like to for these things to exist in the world that we know. :-) A dream chip would hold some secrets, private things they are that we seldom share with others. There are books and websites that apparently are able to tell us what dreams mean, but more often than not, interpreting them seems straight forward enough. I wonder, were someone to watch these dreams, whether they would reveal precisely how John feels about Kyra, what he thinks of her, and whether had things been different, had there been no Cait, whether there his dreams would show that he would have attempted to pursue and develop the obvious attraction between them. Perhaps Kyra suspects that she may feature there, for perhaps she too has had dreams of the same.
Once again, Kyra is the one watching over the others, I like how the balance shifts in this way, so that it isn't always one person that saves the day so to speak, but that they are able to rely upon each other. In their times of need, times of weakness, the other(s) step forward and vice versa.
So nice to have you back, in every which way. :-)
Good to be back Sunshine. This chapter is all about vulnerability and the sweet deliciousness of releasing ourselves into the hands of another, allowing one we desire to touch us, to want them to touch us, to touch us in ways no one each does, in places no one else can. So, there is a surrender to the desire, a giving in or a ceasing of resistance. There is also the private dance, a duet for two and two alone, or the hope that the feeling is mutual. And so, we see two sets of "minds" both looking at the same thing, both wondering if taking the next step is a good thing, what taking that step means and what it doesn't mean. So, there is that moment of stillness, the stillness before the dawn, that stillness in which understanding is reached. What happens next, I don't know. :-D
As always Sweetest, thanks for your very kind words. :-)
wow! That chip sounds like a dream come true! a dream recorder! Ah! if only we could have had such athing in the present times, I would have had ever so many stories that lie unfinished in my limbo due to loss of memory!
Now you have made me jealous of your characters!
Mona, I had some dreams the other night I wouldn't want anyone to see. :-D
Then, there are some I wish I could view over and over again. Good to see you Mona. Hope you have a wonderful weekend. :-)
Have you ever tried that and have it work? To dream the same dream again. I have, so it is possible, if you keep it at the forefront of your mind as you drift off to sleep, if fortune smiles, the dream replays. :-)
I haven't tried that but I have attempted, with success, lucid dreaming whereby you know you are in a dream while in it. All I can say is, the things you do in this state. :-D
So, does she play the chip? ;-)
And if she decided not, does he tell her to play it anyway?
I think the possibility of that chip playing needs a soundtrack. I'm open to suggestions. ;-)
There's the obvious choice - the Everly Brothers (hope I'm not remembering who sang that song wrong) with Dreams. I'll put my thinking cap on and see what else I can come up with. :-D
No, I don't think she would take it, simply for the fact that she would not intrude, though she may be curious, into someone's private space, at least not somebody she respected, without first being asked. If he does ask, she may still decide not to, depending on what she thinks she might find there and depending how she feels about him in relation thereto. If he does ask, however, I think she will. That's what I think.
I think you think what you think and your thinking may or may not be similar to what I'm thinking I may have thought when I think about what was going through my mind at the time. But I think you are more right than wrong on how Kyra would react. ;-)
Darn, didn't work, there I was thinking I could get a little hint out of you. :-)
Let's just say she doesn't need the chip to know what is on his mind. :-)
Wow! What a great fractal. I just had to say that real quick. Now, I'm off to read the post!
My Dear Beautiful Soul, thank you. I haven't gotten a comment on a fractal in so long I've been tempted to stop doing them. You know how much work goes into creating them and that is time that could go in to writing. So, your note is much, very, very, much appreciated. Anything I can do to show you how much? ;-)
My Dear Beautiful Soul, a song for you:
Those Sweet Words
What did you say?
I know I saw you singing
But my ears won't stop ringing
Long enough to hear
Those sweet words
What did you say?
End of the day
The hour hand has spun
But before the night is done
I just have to hear
Those sweet words
Spoken like a melody
All your love
Is a lost balloon
Rising up through the afternoon
'Till it could fit on the head of a pin
Come on in
Did you have a hard time sleeping
'Cause the heavy moon was keeping me awake
And all I know is I'm just glad to see you again
See my Love
Like a lost balloon
Rising up through the afternoon
And then you appear
What did you say?
I know what you were singing
But my ears won't stop ringing
Long enough to hear
Those sweet words
And just simple melody
I just have to hear
Those sweet words
Spoken like a melody
I just wanna hear
Those sweet words...
Or "Sweet Dreams" done by Annie Lennox. 'Cause "everybody's looking for something." Of course, that song might not have the right beat for the tone you are setting. Whatever that might be, lol. Just thinking, both of them are looking for something, there's an unspoken question those dreams might answer. And yet I remember that sometimes dreams can be deceiving. Might be like opening a Pandora's box of sorts. How fun it is imagining where this story will go next. :)
Oliviah, I've been racking my brain all day on that question and right now, I have no frailing clue. :-D
Ooh I want one of those chips! I'd program it to turn dreams into words once I'm done with it. Who know, maybe some would get to be blogged...
Chicky, my dear, I would pay money to see your dreams converted to blog posts. :-D
Trée, that was a beautiful song you posted for me. I will have to see if I can find it on youtube and listen to it.
That fractal was such a wowzer I had to comment on it first before I forgot to after reading the story. I do that so often, think, wow, what a great fractal! And have every intention to comment on it but then I get so caught up in the story, I comment on that and fail to mention the fractal. I am so glad you have continued to post the fractals with the story. I think they stir up the emotions and imagination in a way that makes reading the story more wonderful than I know how to express.
I was thinking about what Autumn said, "A dream chip would hold some secrets, private things that we seldom share with others." Excellent thought. Which made me think, hmm....also, private things that we seldom, if ever, share with our own selves. Which makes me think of the potential Pandora's box thing again.
I think I agree with Autumn that Kyra would not play the chip. I think she already knows what place she has in his dreams. And with what she has just been through, almost like an ascension to a higher level of who she is, she would be less inclined to be a part of something that potentially would hurt that sweet child, not to mention John's wife. Such a spot to be in. One I have been in before, minus the dream chip. :P
I have lucid dreams. I always know what they mean. I have never understood the need to seek writings to explain them or some other soul than my own to define what they mean. And it is fun to know you are dreaming and direct what will happen. I dream in such vivid colors and I can taste, I can smell and I can feel touch. So when I chose to direct my dreams, oh, what an experience that is.
Oliviah, she won't play the chip, for all the reasons you just mentioned, nor would John want her to play it. Some things, like dreams or journals should remain private. Kyra will respect that. Now, that doesn't mean we don't get to view what is on the chip-LOL. And Kyra might have a little fun at John's expense. ;-)
I found the best YouTube version of the song. Enjoy by Dear Beautiful Soul. This one is for you. :-)
Trée, the fractal is amazingly AWESOME! I love it! The large version is hypnotic. I found myself almost nose to monitor staring at it. It's so appropriate for this post, a dream chip, what a concept ;)
The Story and DT would not be what they have come to be were it not for the images, they are such an intergral part of the story, each adding meaning and impression to the words, a beautiful, visually stimulating and inspiring backdrop onto which the words are then painted. I forget much more often than not to comment upon the fractal, and often due to the fact that to place words upon them wouldn't do them justice, at least not my words, but I do absorb them as part of the whole, they are a great part of the overall ripples of response that a chapter awakens. It's part of what makes this place so unique and highly regarded.
:-) One of my favourite Norah tracks, her voice is particularly 'dreamy' here.
Deb, thanks for the kind words on the image. Okay, the images will stay. ;-)
So you had some dreams I hear? Feel free to send that chip my way. Since I'm in them I think I have a right to see what I'm doing. :-D
Actually, they were all about you going to see a mutual friend. I was just an extra. :-D
Happy Sunday, x
Was it Kate? If so, I want the chip, shipped overnight. :-D
a dream not publically viewable!!!
NOW you have me so curious!!!
Mona, I think we all are. I think John has been a naughty boy. :-D
I loved that song! How thoughtful of you to post it for me. I've never heard of her before. First you introduced me to James Blunt (who I listen to almost every single day :O) and now Norah. Wonderful. :-)
Many hugs and kisses to you.
You are more than welcome my Dear Beautiful Soul with eyes that scintillate and coruscate like xmas tree lights on the eve. James and Norah, I could listen to both all day long and both, in my opinion, are better when seen. Right now, "The Long Way Home" is my current Norah fave. Always good to have you stopping by O. :-)
Love and Hugs and Kisses
