419. Von's Journal #7

The eye of the soldier sees not what the eye of the general sees

Great generals converse in many languages and see with many eyes

There are few great generals

The heart, however, knows but one truth

Sate of body -- sate of heart: not consensual

Rend the ardent heart does Janus upon the coup truculent

Lush is a time and a place, for what is lush today is sour tomorrow

At my age, I would not refuse either nor would I sully with appellation

Let the young appellate, the old cannot be bothered with such indiscretions

Pity is a purse that will bankrupt your soul

A captious vessel will not shoal the reef

A taciturn Silus I do miss, caressed by a pure wind and a clear sky

Hmmm...quiet he has been of late, like the many first morns upon Bravo and one wonders if he retreats to observe as he must have done then. Von has never been one to advise without invitation, even then he poses guiding questions rather than offering directing statements, mostly, and although we know that he can be overcome with emotion, as we learned in the chapter where the revelation of Ceru's existence, I wonder how much of what he writes here has to do with his observances of some of the other crew members. The thought struck this morning as I was reading that (as far as I can recall) the witness to the Kiss has never been revealed and were it Von, it would perhaps give him a little more insight into some of the current tensions on board, not least if he caught Kyra's pointed look at John. Von of course also witnessed Kyra making the transmission from Bravo to John and may have gained certain insights here also. Of the crew, Von knows Kyra best, not only that he knows her history, he knows Zeke, for those reasons and simply because the man is smart, he may understand more of what Kyra may be thinking, her motivations and what may be leading her in the directions she is taking them, that she is aware or would like him to, especially if part, regardless of how small, has to do with John indirectly. On the other hand perhaps these reflections are more personal.
Rend the ardent heart... is wonderfully poetic. Put anyone on monitors and ask them to read aloud and it would be my hypothesis there would be an increase in the beat of the heart before the word was reached. :-) One gets the sense from these writings that he is aware of undercurrents, of façades being erected, exchanges that are less than honest and all the while a retreat at Silus, of feeling unencumbered, wouldn't go amiss. I do love these journal entries (The heart...,Rend the ardent heart...,Lush is a time...., these 3 particularly in this entry) that we on occasion see from Von, thoughts that open windows to still more, and really I should have sat with each a while before commenting but I already waited all day, and so.
I (H) DT. :-D

I'm completing something in my own head and heart, putting it to rest.
You are so eloquent with your words, what you dee and feel and say - it would help me.

Thank you.

Thank you Deb. Been a long and exhausting week here in Jacksonville--our National Meeting--my responsibility to plan, organized and then orchestrate. One more day of meetings today and I fly home tomorrow and hope to return to somewhat of a normal life again. :-D
