403. Options
Em left the examination with the same smile she carried in. Dr X, however, seemed heavier than before, as if expectation, unabated, sat on his shoulders as a cloak of lead.
+What's wrong?+ asked Mairi.
+Nothing. Everything is exactly as it is. + replied Dr X.
Mairi watched him fumble with some odd contraption, too small for her to see, and considered his non-response response; then smiled without smiling when she realized she was not nulling.
+Options my dear. I'm just considering the options.+

The image, which is what Dr X is fumbling with, is an ocular replacement. In other words, he is not at all certain at this stage he can restore Em's natural sight.
Just when we had started to presume, you showed us the folly of presuming anything when it comes to this story which has had it's fair share and then some of twists and turns, surprises and shocks, and cliffhangers. If wishes and vows, hope and wanting to help could make everything all right, everything would be so, since that isn't the case, but it doesn't hurt none neither, I'm going to be keeping my fingers crossed too. :-) Very nicely done, the twist, the chapter.
Sight with an implant has some special advantages that normal sight doesn't have. Em might be open minded once she hears all the facts and considers her options.
I will say this. The choice will be a "one-shot" deal, which is to say, whichever way they go, they don't get a do-over if it doesn't work. :-D
...as if expectation, unabated, sat on his shoulders as a cloak of lead... Love the analogy.
Had to work for that one. I think my first try had a rucksack of rocks on his shoulders. :-D
Cloak of lead, I thought, was a little more graceful. :-D
