281. Drifting

With heavy eyes and slurred speech Yul spoke through the early stages of the anesthesia, surgery approaching at the top of the hour.

“Mairi. Are you there?”

“I’m here darlin.” Squeezing Yul’s hand she repeated, “I’m here.”

Yul tried to smile. “Do me a favor. If I don’t make it—“

“Don’t say that. You’re going to make it. I—“

“Please, let me finish.” Yul’s voice seemed distance and getting weaker by the moment. “Tell them I understand. Tell them I forgive them. Tell them I love them.”

Mairi leaned over and kissed her forehead as Yul gave in to the persistence of her leaden eyelids. “I will.”

Sigh

That conversation to a certain extent is probably familiar to us all, the one where we seek to offer reassurance that everything is going to be alright, offering it to ourselves as well as the person facing the risk (whatever it is) only for it to be apparent, that there is no way of knowing. At this moment, she didn't have to be so gracious, none would have blamed her were she verbally upset and disappointed, and it says one of two things, or both. Firstly, she understands, she knows that if things were different, Rog mainly would have been there with her and that it does not reflect the extent to which he loves her. Secondly, the knowledge that she truly might not make it and the knowledge too, that were she to leave them behind further compounding the guilt they would already feel at not having been there, caring about them as she does, she is able to see that clearly at this time where she so wishes they could have been there.

Short and very, very sweet, so to speak, where again it is clear how one chapter builds upon the other as even in such a short scene, everyone is in the room.

Very nicely done. All my bits crossed for Yul.

Sunshine, Yul is dying and she knows it. The doctors who are going to operate can't save her and her intuition is telling her that. She might not be the most educated person, but her people reading skills are superb and she has seen the look and tone the doctors have taken.

Although the floating city is call The City of Hope, Yul has reached that serene place just beyond hope, that place where struggle stops and acceptance begins and in that place, she finds love and forgiveness, not anger and bitterness. She knows Trev is not there. And of course, neither is Rog. And she knows she is going to die as she feels her body shutting down and the medicine ushers her along.

So, I think what we see is as pure a look into Yul's heart as we will ever see. And, in a few hours, the operation. Not sure yet if we are going to go there or not.

As always, I do so love her engagement. Hope you are feeling better. I have more chicken soup if need be. :-)

For me, I'm hanging on to the other side for as long as possible, this side of hope, where the thought that we might lose Yul is too much to deal with. Not going there until such a time that there is no other choice. In other words, feeling as Mairi does. And I like the re-introduction of calm as shown somewhat in those last scenes of Kyra and the others before they disappeared.

Like sunshine after the rain, to see a new chapter after some quiet time. Amazes me still how wonderful this story is, even after 18 months of it.

I will have to catch up on this story. I would like to know where did you get or who did your artwork?

Trée said...

Inside, I do all of the artwork you see on my computer. I use about ten different programs. This particular image was done with a freeware program called Apophysis. Just ask, I'll be happy to share what programs I used to create which images. Thanks for stopping by. :-)

These pages are wonderful. Not only does the artwork make my eyes stare, but the stories are well written to the point of wanting to read more. I thank you for the honor of getting to read them and look forward to more.

Inside, I would be honored to have you catch up with the story. As most of my readers will tell you, I love sincere engaged comments on the story and respond to all comments. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. :-)

Sunshine, all I can say is "hold on." I don't want to lose Yul either, but once she goes under the knife, it is out of my control. I'll be hoping against hope to, but John did tell her many chapters ago, and she did try to commit suicide and thought of using the oblivians, because the prognosis was terminal. Nothing has changed and time has moved and so here we find ourselves. But,as they say, its not over til its over, and I do have a little to say in what happens next. :-D

Stay tuned. Sometimes you find friends in strange places. ;-)

Or other people have friends. :-)

Despite Yul surviving her suicide attempt and us still not being sure of what has happened to Kyra, Em and Von, nor can we be entirely certain that all are lost from Hyneria, Kieran shows us that it is possible for a character to relinquish life, which in turn offers the reasurance that should worst come to worst, Yul won't be perhaps entirely lost to us. One thing is certain above all else, we tend to be in for a surprise when we reach predicaments such as this where there is a chance that tragedy is on route. You are the master of not only cliffhangars but of twists, and so, in short, The Story has me at the edge of my seat and in every other way too. :-)

Sweet dreams, when you get that far, x

You know, I kinda like you on the edge of your seat. Could you just lean forward a tiny bit more. Might help with, well, moving the story forward. :-D

Sure thing, more than ready to do my bit to create some movement. :-) Happy Monday, poppet, may you have a great one, x

I am here waiting... interesting that it took me this long to find a story I wish to read.

I usually am reading poetry and such ... how long does a lady have to wait?? ::smiles:::

Trée said...

Oh Inside, your comment warms my soul more than you know. Let's call the waiting anticipation, a slow movement of imagination and possibility similar to a long walk in a strange city or perhaps a chance encounter with a beautiful stranger who returns a look that makes the heart race and the knees weak.

I won't keep you waiting much longer. :-)

Enchanting ... perhaps I will have a cool glass of deep red wine and relax while I wait.

Inside, the next chapter is posted. Enjoy. :-)
