189. Moments

Journal Entry: 02:327:005 M24: (Kyra)

There are moments that only make sense in hindsight, moments that appear within the flow of the present and as quickly as they appear, take leave. There are also moments, for whatever reason, that alter the fabric of our lives unlike all the moments that came before. How and why, I do not understand nor do I feel I can claim to have orchestrated the moment or the change. I sit here now, in the peace and quiet of my quarters, only the glow of my slate and a few distant stars illuminating my room, and I wonder again, exactly what happened.

Those few witnesses, the ones still living that is, who I suppose is only Von, would tell a different story. Von claims he knows what he saw, but the eyes often conspire with the mind to deceive. I won’t deny his record of events has a literal truth, but like the calm surface of an unknown lake, what lies beneath is often a different matter. To see and to be, two different matters I say. So, let him have his truth if it fulfills a need only he can feel. Who am I to deny him the satisfaction of his view? For all I know, truth may lie more with his view than my own. Either way, his story or mine, at the end, just two stories, neither but a reflection of the myriad mirrors of our minds, distorted by time and distance, by desire and agenda, by past and future.

From the night they came in ones and twos; from east and west and north--of that there is no doubt. I glanced at Von, the last act of pure intent that I recall. I have never seen eyes communicate so much in just a look, but I knew he was spent and I knew that all that Papa had ever taught, all that he had ever cultivated in me, all that he had ever dreamed and hoped, that now was the harvest. Papa had sown. I would reap. What value the market would bear would be known to all, or I should say to Von and I, in a matter of moments. I still wonder at that thought. Years of preparation for the test of a single moment, life in the balance; yet, to say otherwise would contradict all that is agreed. Note to self: explore this idea of “moments” when time permits.

I remember standing as if in a dream. I could see and feel myself move, fluidly, and I suppose effortlessly, since I recall no more effort than a thought, as if, again, I had entered an altered state. To say I moved by willful intent, I cannot say. To say the night became darker than dark is recorded and I will not dispute the record. But let it be written here, from the corners of my eyes, arching upward and over my sight like a rainbow, I can honestly say I saw nothing other than a kaleidoscope of light.

But to say I saw is not accurate. My eyes were closed as surely as in a dream, so says Von and I concur. Upon this much we agree. The thin membrane of my eyelids, however, did not prevent me from seeing as I have never seen before. All before me became clear and when I say all, I mean all as surely as if I had eyes on the back of my head. I saw in the way of higher mind and not with the waves of physics. If I could be clearer I would, but I don’t know the words to describe an all-knowing sight that sees without seeing. This is not a metaphor. I know this sight and it is both of this world yet not of this world. Sight as Papa used to speak of, of which I never understood. Sight as Kieran has shown me on more than one occasion. I do not expect anyone reading this to understand without direct experience, as I did not understand, no matter how elegantly Papa tried to explain it, until I too bathe in the natural light unobstructed with the filters of language and image.

I felt my arms rise. Even now I do not recall intentionally raising them. But rise they did to the height of my shoulders and with my cape I cast a shadow over Von, which I know he won’t admit, but I knew he welcomed the cloak of my temperate shadow that gave comfort in the cold misty night. For the third time in my life I felt a warmth radiate from the center of my being, a warmth I’m reluctant to mention since I have no way of describing the feeling to anyone other than Papa or Kieran and neither of them are here to share in mutual understanding but I will say this: the warmth has a sound as much as a feel. What that sound is, I cannot say but there is a rhythm, a faintly familiar rhythm that if you felt it you would recognize it, you would want to float and swim and play as babies do in mothers arms in that sound without sound. Even now, I hear the silent echo of that warmth, and I wonder if I am touching it now or simply touching a memory and then too, close your ears Papa, I wonder if there is a difference.

I would like to say this warmth, this feeling, this rhythm is all good and wonderful but to say such would be to limit and in so limiting to perpetuate falsehood. To say the warmth was welcomed, of that I have mixed emotions. Without that warmth, I do not believe either I or Von would be here today. But the warmth is not of this world, although I know Papa would disagree with me. Yet, my memories of the iso ward, of Kieran, of the table where we sat and his hands extended to hold mine and the cuts and wounds that were healed in that instant tell me otherwise. But, as Von says, I am of this world, and I did manifest that warmth as no one else is able and therefore to say it is something other is not entirely true either. To say I don’t know is perhaps the greatest truth I can share.

So where does that put me? Am I a conduit between two worlds? Are my visions of Kieran and his continued presence in my life, of which I have told no one except for the one brief conversation with Mairi, are these visions real? Or am I losing my mind? Delusions of the mind trying to protect itself from further hurt? No one has asked me, but if they were, I could not say I have yet fully recovered from the coma. It is never far from my mind and the dreams or nightmares, well, they have remained a private matter that time and events have not allowed me to examine or exercise as the case may be. I had many experiences, of the mind or the spirit I cannot say, while I laid those many days. I have also not told anyone that while my physical self lay in stasis, my non-physical self, and I’ll leave it at that, was not. I saw and heard every conversation that happened and although I had and still have many reservations about this, I am forever grateful for the sincere love and concern the entire crew showed for my well being.

But, I’m getting ahead of myself. These creatures from the dark, too numerous to count, dissolved into the light before my eyes; from certain death to an eerie quiet was but an instant. How? I don’t know. Where did they go? Don’t know that either. I opened my eyes and felt the light recede and I looked at Von and his eyes looked bigger than I had ever seen them. I reached down with my right hand and extended it to him and grasping my hand, he stood. He had the oddest look on his face and seemed unable to stop staring at me until a light broke the spell.

At this moment, we noticed a twirling light emerge from the rear of the compound and we knew. She was gone again, our disappointment tempered by pure exhaustion. Still, we entered the compound and searched like a bride looking for the diamond that had slipped from her engagement ring. With each empty room our anxiousness increased and what we knew to be true exerted itself beyond our ability to deny it. Our diamond would not be found here.

Then the call came. I still remember the voice. Not Trev’s but the second one.. He said his name was John, John Discovery, and he was here to help. Speaking of which, John is on his way to my quarters in a few minutes so I’ll end here for tonight’s entry.

Kyra turned the slate off and the soft green light slowly faded. She placed her slate on the top of her desk and walked over to the picture window that formed her forward wall and gazed down at the planet below. Mairi was still down there somewhere. They would find her and John would help.

188. Quill This

John stared at the data slate for a micron before giving the order. “Destroy those patrol craft, now! Tom, organize a boarding party to the unknown craft and please let them know we are coming aboard. I want no accidents. Once aboard, I want full cloaking employed with multiple decoys at random vectors.”

__________

“Whatcha got Trev? What’s abnormal?” asked Em, chest heaving and eyes wide.

“Well, I’m not versed on how to interpret this data plane, but it looks like we have multiple craft approaching at rapid velocity from contrary directions. All appear to be on a direct vector—.“ Blinding white light filled the bridge. “Em, are you there? Em, I can’t see! Em?”

__________

“Tom, status report?”

“Five of the six patrol craft destroyed.”

“And the sixth?”

“Returning to base.”

“Jam all channels. Full pursuit. I do not want that vessel returning to the planet.”

__________

“Taren, doesn’t seem to be our day. Notify Dr. X. Change of plans. He’ll know what I mean,” said the voice.

“And the Tearacs?”

“Can’t take them with us. Let them feast. And Taren?”

“Yes?”

“I appreciate your loyalty.”

__________

“Bravo-Four-Zero, this is Kulmyk command. Prepare to be boarded. We mean you no harm. Do not resist.”

“Tom,” said John, shaking his head.

“What? I mean every word,” said Tom. “I do, really.”

“Hellocks,” said Yul. “We’ve heard that before. Em, do you know where Von left the cache?”

“Yep, follow me. Trev, delay that boarding party.”

“What?”

“Trev!

“Alright, alright.”

“And you wonder when they're gonna drop.” said Yul.

“Come again?”

“The boys. You know. Em, come on,” Yul replied as she grabbed her crotch.

“Oh, yeah, right, the boys.”

__________

“Tom, you ready?”

“Yes sir.”

“At your command. Oh and Tom, we want to make a good impression this time. Weapons on quill. Understood.”

“Absolutely John.”

“Yeah, I mean it this time Tom.”

“Got it. You know me.”

John smiled. “Yes, Tom, I do.”

__________

Foggy condensation filled the bay. A central dark grey blockish shape appeared haloed with bright white light. A high pitch whine wound down punctuated with two loud blasts.

“Don’t hold back Em, unless you want to end up like Mairi.” Yul braced her feet against the cold metal bulkhead, dual las canon firmly seated on her right shoulder. Taking aim on the right portal she squeezed off three more bolts in rapid succession. “That’s for Rog you bastards.”

“T-o-m,” said John, lowering his chin, eyes rolling up.

“Damn it John, we are under fire.”

“Big picture Tom and wipe that grin off your face. Besides, do you really want the blood of two unknown females with minimal weapons on your hands? How would I explain that to command? Weapons to quill. That’s an order. Now open the hatch and put that cannon down. Geessh.”

__________

“Trev, seal off the bay,” commed Yul.

“But—“

“No frailing buts, do it, now! Em, take aim on the left side. Em? Frail, where did you go?

187. Seasons

The warm glow quickly faded. Gifts could be that way as the river of the present moment snaked its way around the bend from one village to the next in ever constant motion. The present moment, thought Em, but a knife’s edge between what was and what was to come. Stay too long and you were likely to get cut. If only we saw sadness and worry and doubt as the same stowaways.

Writing helped. Moving to her desk, the distant cosmos displayed before her, she opened the drawer and pulled out her stationary. In the upper corner she jotted #164.

Dear Father,

I’m feeling a bit melancholy so I hope you don’t mind. I just don’t feel there is anyone else who wants to hear my troubles at the moment. Fact is, I feel silly and selfish when I compare my concerns to what everyone else onboard is experiencing. Yet, still, how does one shake the doldrums, regardless of how small, when they take up residence in your mind like a reluctant stubborn mule, blocking out all sane perspective.

In the past I’ve compared space travel with sailing the seas, as we did so many times. I feel I’ve misled you father. There is very little they have in common, or so it seems at the moment. For instance, seasons. You know how I used to always complain about winter. How it took all the fun out of sailing. And the spring rains too. I did my fair share of complaining about them too.

Well, in space, you have no seasons. Temp onboard is always the same. No rain, no snow, no cool fresh air, no wind, no real sun. Life feels sterile without the seasons, nature’s gentle reminder of change, of the cycle of life and death. What I would give to stand on the bow one more time and feel the spring rains wash over me. There is no rain in space. There are no seasons. There is no sense of the cycle but rather just a steady constant sameness, a maddening unrelentingly suffocating sterility.

You see, but you can’t touch. Space looks cold, is cold. You feel entombed in the very metal and glass that pretends to be home. Imagine if you could never leave the interior of your ship, never feel the warm sun on your face or the wind in your hair, taste the salty sea spray on your lips or hear the hark of birds signaling port was soon to follow. And imagine that the sun neither rose nor set and the stars were forever changing, familiar patterns left long ago. We pretend we are going somewhere and in those pretensions, father, we ward off insanity.

Speaking of which, there is no sound either. The sound of crickets, that wonderful sound of connection to something alive, something living and breathing and communicating, a sound as dear and sweet as a baby’s lullaby; or the sound of the leaves rustling across the path on a hike in the mountains dancing with the wind in faded oranges and yellows and reds like precocious children pretending they don’t know you are watching them. You never quite appreciate those sounds until space robs them from you, tries to erase them from your memory with the antiseptic of time; and you find yourself becoming bitter at the very nature you claim to miss. And don’t even get me started on the sound of the ocean kissing the warm sands of home, a sound as soothing and maternal as the womb. Space is like that—womb-less and frigid, uninviting and unforgiving. And to think we dreamed of travel like this.

Speaking of the womb, I often wonder what a child born in space, reared in space, in the womb of this ship, I wonder if they would be like me or you. I wonder how the lack of touch and smell and sight and sound would shape them into something I wouldn’t recognize. Father, I feel, like the hands of space and time are shaping me now, changing me and it scares the bejanus out of me. If we don’t find a home soon, I’m afraid you won’t recognize me and more over, I’m deathly afraid I won’t recognize myself. Ever look in the mirror and wonder who that is staring back at you? I did yesterday, for the first time.

Of time, well, I have all the time in the world now to paint and draw. You would think I would have a whole collection of stuff. And I do. But guess what. It’s soulless. It took a sketch of Rog I did for Yul to open my eyes. Every sketch of a planet, a star, a solar system, another vessel, all of it soulless, cold, lifeless—just like the expanse of space. What is a planet without context, without a story, without connection, without relationship? As cold as a witch’s tit on the day after carnival—please excuse my language father. I’ll snap out of this. Perhaps with the next bend.

And so I wonder, would that child grow up soulless, something less than a full-blooded breathing smelling touching Hynerian? Or would they slap my parochial self-centeredness back into some semblance of reality? I don’t know anymore, but I do know I appreciate you listening to my gibberish. Does help. Really does.

Speaking of help, I should really shut down my pity party and go see if I can be of service. As always, missing you tons.

Love,

Em

Sealed with a kiss, Em slid number 164 directly behind 163 and closed the drawer in unison to the sound of her comm.

“Em, Trev here. I’m picking up some data abnormalities. Could you provide me with your assistance on the bridge?”

“Be there is just a sec Trev.” Em grabbed her stuff and walked over to the mirror. “I’m not sure who you are but I suppose I better get use to having you around. Now buck up sister.”

186. Axon Terminal

+It’s okay Mairi, you can keep your eyes closed. The scan works on synaptic discourse. The warmth of your skin conducts the signal and should give you a slight tingle, perfectly harmless+, intoned Dr. X aligning the red laser over the center of her eye.

Mairi gritted her teeth; her eyes closed tight, her chest fully exposed. Telepathic communication gave her the same weird sensation as giving bone marrow, neither pleasant nor painful but rather an odd sense of naked violation. The feeling was neither tickle nor itch as much as an indescribable viscous feeling of vacuum--as if the very essence of her soul was being sucked out against her will. Her hands pulled in vain against the rough scratchy rope as if they could wipe away the sensation like a pregnant bead of sweat on precipice of her brow.

+Relax Mairi. There is nowhere to go and nothing to do.+

_______

“John, incoming message. I think you should take this one.”

Flicking his eyes to the right, the private message appeared on the inside of his dark blue visor:

Dear Johnny,

I love you. Do your job. Do it right. Hurry back.

Love,

Cait.

John flicked his eyes down and left and the message faded away.

“Good news John?”

“Yeah, good news,” said John, pursing his lips into a tight smile causing his crow's feet to take on shadow and light in exaggerated folds like heavy cloth.

_______

“Trev, what’s the update? asked Yul.

“No change I’m afraid. I will say this, a lesser Hynerian would not have survived the punishment Rog has absorbed. How much longer is a matter between Rog and Janus.”

“And the arm?”

“We’ll wait as long as we can, but if . . .”

Yul looked down. Trev looked away.

_______

“Taren, our visitors didn’t materialize out of thin air. Launch a patrol. I want the survivors alive since our Tearacs won’t give us that pleasure with our two guests. Consider it a little insurance in case our dear doctor runs into resistance,” said the voice.

_______

Von looked at Kyra out of the corner of his weary eyes as if to say I’ll give you what I’ve got but don’t expect a miracle. Kyra caught the look and smiled without smiling. Standing between Von and the rising murmur she closed her eyes and lifted her arms, palms out. From light came darkness and from darkness came light and a warm sensation lifted his spirit.

185. At Valla

Kyra at Valla

Sometimes you work and work and work and realize you are probably trying too hard. All four versions of the above sketch were done with the same reference photo. All four had the same goal--capture the magic in the reference as close as possible. Maybe they could be sisters but they sure don't look like the same person--LMAO.
